Short Description

The Division of Critical Care Medicine seeks a board-certified/board-eligible intensivist to provide expert intensive care across two clinical settings. The physician will deliver primarily overnight critical care coverage at Cooper University Hospital, the region’s Level I trauma center and academic flagship, and daytime intensive care coverage at Cape May Hospital. This is a dual-site, academic appointment combining frontline clinical excellence, procedural mastery, teaching of medical students and housestaff, and active engagement in the academic and civic life of the institution. The successful candidate is an outstanding clinician and a model institutional citizen who elevates the care environment for patients, learners, and colleagues alike.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive critical care management for patients in the intensive care units at both sites, including initial stabilization, ongoing management, and coordination of multidisciplinary care
  • Serve as the primary overnight intensivist at Cooper University Hospital, supervising the ICU and responding to acute deterioration, admissions, codes, and rapid response events
  • Provide daytime ICU coverage at Cape May Hospital, including rounding, admissions, family communication, and transitions of care
  • Lead and coordinate care across the multidisciplinary ICU team, including nursing, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, and consulting services
  • Ensure safe, evidence-based, and patient-centered care consistent with division protocols and national standards
  • Support appropriate triage and transfer of patients between sites and to higher levels of care as clinically indicated

Procedural Competencies

The physician is expected to independently perform and supervise all common critical care bedside procedures, including but not limited to:

  • Central venous and arterial line placement
  • Endotracheal intubation and advanced airway management
  • Bronchoscopy
  • Tube thoracostomy (chest tube placement)
  • Thoracentesis and paracentesis
  • Lumbar puncture
  • Point-of-care ultrasound (vascular access, cardiac, thoracic, and abdominal assessment)
  • Temporary hemodialysis/CRRT catheter placement

The physician must maintain procedural competency, support credentialing requirements, and provide hands-on procedural supervision and instruction to housestaff and students.

Documentation and Compliance

  • Complete all clinical documentation — admission notes, daily progress notes, procedure notes, and discharge/transfer summaries — accurately and within institutional timeliness standards
  • Ensure documentation supports quality, billing compliance, and continuity of care
  • Adhere to all health system policies, regulatory requirements, and medical staff bylaws at both clinical sites

Teaching and Academic Responsibilities

  • Hold a faculty appointment at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU) and fulfill all associated responsibilities
  • Model excellence as a clinical teacher to residents and fellows, providing bedside instruction, procedural training, and constructive feedback
  • Teach, supervise, and evaluate medical students in full accordance with CMSRU policies and accreditation standards governing student involvement in patient care
  • Foster a supportive, inclusive, and rigorous learning environment that promotes clinical reasoning and professional development
  • Contribute to didactic teaching, case conferences, and other educational activities of the division and medical school

Quality, Scholarship, and Service

  • Actively participate in division and institutional quality improvement and patient safety initiatives
  • Contribute to scholarly activity, which may include research, quality projects, presentations, or publications
  • Engage in service to the community, supporting the health system’s mission and outreach efforts
  • Participate in the broader academic and civic life of the institution

Citizenship and Professionalism

  • Attend and actively contribute to faculty meetings, division meetings, and required institutional functions
  • Serve as a model institutional citizen at Cooper University Hospital — collegial, dependable, and committed to the shared mission
  • Demonstrate professionalism, integrity, and respect in all interactions with patients, families, learners, and colleagues
  • Support a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement
